It is curiosity that drives us to try new things and to make the unmeasurable measurable.
Courage.
We are going forward with courage and are committed to a future for all. In doing so, we sometimes take unusual paths.
Creativity.
Creativity is needed in all our areas of work. It helps us to work with a distinct focus on finding solutions and to drive our research forward.
Visions.
It all starts with a good idea – a vision. From this, we develop something new – for us and for our customers.
Cooperation.
We can only reach our goal through cooperation and collaboration. Each and everyone of us contributes to the successes and is perceived as an important team member.

TVöD: fair and transparent remuneration
TVöD is the German collective bargaining agreement for the public service. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft acts in compliance with the regulations set out in this agreement with regard to employment, remuneration and social security benefits. All contracts and salary grades are based on the TVöD. It guarantees equal and fair remuneration for all employees based on their level of experience and area of work.
Performance-based bonuses
We offer our employees performance-based bonuses and an inventor's remuneration.
Work-life balance through flexible working time models
At Fraunhofer IPM, there are no binding core working hours. Part-time and individual working time models are possible. Furthermore, employees have the opportunity to work from home – regardless of career level. This allows our employees to balance their private life and their career.
Equal opportunities
Equal opportunities means equality for all – the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has signed the "Charta der Vielfalt" (Diversity Charter) in 2011 and we are committed to these goals. We also have equal opportunities officers at our institute. Flexible working hours make it possible for everyone to balance their career and their lifestyles.
Further training & individual career planning
We want to support all our employees. To this end, we offer workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics. Further training and development opportunities are discussed in annual employee appraisals.
Industry-oriented research / applied research with a purpose
As an institute for applied research, we work directly with the industry. This turns theory into practice. With our research, we support a sustainable world and ensure that resources are used efficiently.
Modern working environment
Our institute is located on the campus of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg. The close proximity to the university and other Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg allows us to engage in collaborations. The building was inaugurated in 2020 and has high-end laboratories and excellent equipment for research.
Health & Sports
Our institute is a member of Hansefit, a provider of health programs for companies. The Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg also offer a number of sports programs. We support the mobility and health of our employees with height-adjustable desks. Our company doctor takes care of employees' health concerns.
VBL company pension scheme
Our employees in the public sector are entitled to a company pension scheme (Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder, VBL).
Job ticket
The RegioKarte Job or the Deutschland-Ticket Job – both are subsidized by us and allow us to take a relaxed approach to commuting.
Canteen
Our in-house canteen offers a freshly cooked menu that changes daily and always includes a vegetarian option.
(Electric) car and bicycle parking spaces
There are plenty of parking spaces on our premises – both for cars and bicycles. It is also possible to charge electric vehicles.
As an institute for applied research, we have strong links with the universities in the region. Our collaboration with the University of Freiburg is particularly fruitful – and not just because of our institute's proximity to the campus of the University of Freiburg's Faculty of Engineering. Cooperation is also evident in the Sustainability Center, a cooperation between the University of Freiburg and the Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg.
Fraunhofer IPM has excellent links with the University of Freiburg through three associated university professorships. We are in direct contact with basic research and have access to latest research results. This benefits our customers, but also students and doctoral candidates, who can work and learn at the interface between university and industry.
Find information on Professorships here.
Researchers at Fraunhofer IPM teach in the Master of Science in Microsystems Engineering, Master of Science in Embedded Systems Engineering, Master of Science in Sustainable Systems Engineering and Master of Science in Applied Physics programs at the University of Freiburg's Faculty of Engineering.
We offer students many opportunities to work with us. They can start as student assistants or write their Bachelor's or Master's thesis with us. This allows them to gain an insight into the world of applied research and make contacts.
Doctoral candidates at Fraunhofer IPM are actively involved in the work of the institute – they are part of a research group and take on challenging tasks in applied and industry-related research projects or work on fundamental research questions. We offer our doctoral candidates excellent supervision in our well-equipped institute and the opportunity to attend our doctoral seminar and workshops on various topics. Find details here.
