Light in the Dark: High-Resolution Underwater Surveying and Inspection Using LiDAR
Laser-based measurement systems have become indispensable in precise 3D surveying. They capture buildings, roads, transportation routes, and entire cities with unprecedented precision and efficiency. However, underwater environments often remain in darkness: Here, sonar-based surveying systems dominate, but their achievable resolution and precision significantly lag behind the possibilities of terrestrial surveys. We demonstrate how specially adapted laser scanners can also perform reliable and high-resolution surveys beneath the water surface. The achievable resolution is in the millimeter range. These systems can be used for highly accurate inspection and surveying tasks, providing a previously unknown level of detailed digital imaging. This opens up a multitude of new possibilities, such as in the field of offshore wind energy, the inspection of pipelines and subsea cables, or the detection of unexploded ordnance.
